Williams won her last U.S. Open title in 2014 against Caroline Wozniacki (6-3, 6-3) for her sixth and final win at the major tournament of her career:
While she has not been as active in recent years, Williams has six U.S. Open titles to her name, with four losses including as recently as 2018 and 2019. She is still two wins behind Molla Bjurstedt Mallory who has eight total, all from nearly 100 years ago.
Her opponent today, Koviniç, has never advanced past the third round of a major and has only won two matches total in her career at the U.S. Open.
In the other women’s match, runner-up Fernandez looks to pick up where she left off last year and close out her first major title win in the same week she turns 20 years old.
For the men, Kyrgios and Tsitsipas are both major-less for their careers but have all the tools to make a run this year and win their first. With Novak Djokovic not in the field, there is more of an open feeling at the 2022 U.S. Open.
